Abstract

The paper aims to identify conditions and factors that can either facilitate or limit the generation of knowledge which can help improve firms' competitiveness. By implication, the growth and development of innovative firms contributes to the competitiveness of the territory in which they operate.

Our research is divided into three macro phases that deal with theoretical analysis, empirical research and the resulting comparison between the two.

In the first phase, we examine contributions from both Italian and International academics/and experts who have tackled the theme of innovation. We also study the analysis of the phenomenon of innovation in more depth, both at the individual business level and at a territorial level. The empirical research carried out in the second phase of the paper deals with firms that operate in the area of Salerno (city of Salerno and its province). Finally, in the summary we compare the results from the empirical research with those from the theoretical analysis.
